About this song, Lyricist Rupert Holmes wrote:

“Below please find the correct lyrics for a song that Marvin truly inspired…one that he demanded we write.  I consider it to be one of his most personal and deeply-felt songs.  The music is utter heartbreaking Marvin magic, of course. But just as importantly, the lyric I wrote speaks on behalf of Marvin…one of the great “Marvin anthems” and, like so much of Marvin’s body of work, a song that transcends its setting.

Reviewing these words, I miss Marvin again as if his passing were only hours ago. This happens all the time to me. I imagine I’ll feel this way the rest of my life.” – Lyricist Rupert Holmes.

The Nutty Professor Musical:

The Nutty Professor Musical is based on the famed 1963 Jerry Lewis film of the same name.

Directed by Jerry Lewis, features music by multiple Tony and Oscar winner Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line) and a book and lyrics by three-time Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood).

The musical follows geeky chemistry Professor Kelp, who concocts a formula to turn himself into the ultimate heartthrob. Utilizing elements of classic comedy, the creators of The Nutty Professor try to redefine what an American musical comedy can be — “funny with a fabulous score” and characters that resonate with the audience.

LYRICS: While I Still Have The Time

Growing up my mother used to tell me,

“Be thankful you’ve been born just where you were.

Not everyone on God’s good Earth is free now,

Can be what they would be now

Or do what they prefer.”

I have a lot of plans I plan to get to.

I dream while I’m awake, and dream a lot.

Though sometimes dreams can hide and forget you,

Each morning will forget me not.

And while I still have the time

I’ll stop to savor each drop of time,

Taste every flavor,

And never rest, and never sleep,

But ever keep this vow my way.

And while I still have the day,

Each blessed hill I’ll climb.

I’ll own each day until

I’ve had my fill

While I still have the time.

So many paths that branch in all directions,

So many lives to live and risks to take.

A thousand journeys I envision.

It’s such a big decision,

Can’t rush the choice I make.

And while I still have the time

I’ll stop to savor each drop of time,

Taste every flavor

And never rest, and never sleep,

But ever keep this vow my way.

And while I still have the day,

Each blessed hill I’ll climb,

And I will learn it all

And be it all

And see it all,

And love a lot

And, like as not,

I’ll lose it all,

And laugh until

I’ve had my fill,

While I still have the time…

My time.
