About the musical “They’re Playing Our Song”

In an interview for BBC Marvin Hamlisch explains how this song came about. Carole Bayer Sager is also interviewed here:

Marvin: At the time, Neil Simon had come to me to talk to me about doing one of his dramas as a musical, called “Gingerbread Lady.” And I will go to his house and talk about it. I remember saying to him that I didn’t think that it was going to make a musical, but during the time that I did talk to him I’d be telling him: “You’d never believe what Carole and I did today. You know we came home and we were so determined and we wrote a song…I mean I just told him stuff.

Carole: “I guess he will show up at these meetings and he’ll either say nice things about me or complain about me depending upon the day or the hour or the minute and I guess Neil found it very intriguing, the idea of two people who were trying to have a relationship together and who also were writing songs together.

Marvin: “And all of a sudden a script comes to our door, and it was amazing, it was about this relationship of a guy who is a composer and a girl who is a lyricist and it really wasn’t autobiographical because I never sat down with Neil to give him my life story; but Neil doesn’t need much to start out something you know. So he just loved the idea of two people who work together and live together. I mean he just found that attractive as an idea.

Carole: So the “Gingerbread Lady” got put aside and I felt so protected to have Neil Simon, who is just masterful at his craft and to have Marvin. I Just thought “well I’ll be crazy not to try to do this, with this support I had.”
