Philadelphia, PA — What happens when a wisecracking mega‐successful composer takes on a new lyricist—a kooky, insecure, incurable romantic, still bruised by a recently ended love affair? Initially the match is one not made in heaven, but anyone who has ever seen a musical knows, they are destined to end up together.
(“They’re Playing Our Song” previewed April 9 and April 10, opened on April 11 and ran through April 26 at the AdrienneTheatre’s SkyBox, 2030 Sansom Street.)
Robert Smythe starred as Vernon Gersch, opposite Mellissa Connell as Sonia Walsch, the crazy couple whose professional and personal successes and difficulties lead to one hilarious scene after another.
For the record:
“They’re Playing Our Song” is a song‐filled and endearingly funny love story based on the real‐life relationship of one of the most prolific American song writing teams of the 20th Century: Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager.
Center City Theatre Works proudly presented their production of “They’re Playing Our Song” with Music by Tony and Academy‐Award winning Marvin Hamlisch, Lyrics by Grammy Award‐winning Carol Bayer Sager, and a Script by three time Tony winner Neil Simon.
