REVIEW: THE MUSIC:
“Fifteen minutes into watching The Informant!, I was unexpectedly hooked on Marvin Hamlisch’s sound — a fabulous, balanced mix of unabashedly ‘70s instruments, melodies, beats and flourishes, with a touch of irony and modern grace for present-day audiences. Yeah, I liked it a lot. – M.M.B”

The Informant! (2009)
Soderbergh, Matt Damon and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns turn Kurt Eichenwald’s book about Mark Whitacre, an agribusiness executive who exposed a massive price-fixing scandal in the 90s, into a magnificent farce about the worst informant in the history of criminal investigation.
Damon is perfection, the human embodiment of Marvin Hamlisch’s burbling retro score. Every role is cast with a comic performer, giving the story an even stranger energy. The details of Whitacre’s involvement are insanely complicated, but also factually accurate. And the ending? Well, the ending is magnificent. (Now Toronto, 2017)

LISTEN: Song: “After Car” (From Film “The Informant,” 2009)
Marvin Hamlisch’s words about his musical score for The Steven Soderberg movie The Informant! (Soderbergh was inspired by Hamlisch’s score for Woody Allen’s Bananas.) To come up with the movie’s signature riff, he had to get inside the mind of the main character, a corporate whistleblower (played by Matt Damon) with bipolar disorder.
I realized that I had to approach the score from the point of view of the main character -the way the main character would be thinking, and it turns out that he was just having the best time of his life, and the FBI were nuts. Then the jaunty melody just comes to you.” – Marvin Hamlisch
