“A Chorus Line is based on an audition. The great thing about the show is that the audience kind of gets three shows in one. On one hand it is an amazing dance show, on the other hand it is a Broadway razzle dazzle musical with a great score by the late great MARVIN HAMLISCH, but on the other hand it is also a play.” – John Partridge (“Zach” – A Chorus Line London)

The original Broadway production opened in 1975 and ran for 6,137 performances, becoming one of the longest running productions in Broadway history along with Phantom, Cats, Chicago, Lion King, and Les Miserables among others.

A Chorus Line is a musical with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. Centered on seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line, the musical is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. A Chorus Line provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers.

Following several workshops and an Off-Broadway production, A Chorus Line opened on Broadway on July 25, 1975, directed and choreographed by Buffalo native Michael Bennett. An unprecedented box office and critical hit, the musical received 12 Tony Award nominations and won 9 of them, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

  1. Just attended the afternoon matinee (Jan. 9, 2016) of Chorus Line, presented at the Riverside Theatre, in Vero Beach, FL. It is timeless and the musical score, One “Reprise”, as uplifting now as it was 35+ years ago….guaranteed to put a spring in your walk! This musical is considered, and rightfully so, one of the “all time greats” … no doubt, it will continue to dance its way into peoples’ hearts for years to come!!

  2. Streisand released a statement praising Hamlisch, stating it was “his brilliantly quick mind, his generosity and delicious sense of humor that made him a delight to be around.
