The 1993 musical “The Goodbye Girl,” which boasts a score by Marvin Hamlisch, Lyrics by David Zippel and a book by Neil Simon was sung in concerts (two concerts) at Feinstein / 54 Below by the actress Kate Baldwin and the actor Santino Fontana.

David Zippel (The Lyricist for the Musical Score) directed the two concert performances on June 26, 2017.

Kate Baldwin:

Baldwin told Playbill, “I saw the out of town tryout and loved its humor and heart with such flawed humans at the center. And those Marvin Hamlisch songs with lyrics by my friend David Zippel give an actor so much to bite into. I’m thrilled to get to do it.”

Baldwin (Finian’s Rainbow, Big Fish) is cast as downhearted single-mom and former dancer Paula, with Fontana (Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella,
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) as Elliot, the overzealous actor who ends up moving into her apartment. Baldwin, who earned a Tony nomination for her performance in
the 2010 revival of Finian’s Rainbow, has also appeared in Big Fish and Wonderful Town. She is currently in rehearsals for the Bette Midler revival of
Hello, Dolly!, playing Irene Molloy.

Santino Fontana

Fontana earned his Tony nomination for his performance as the Prince in Cinderella. His Broadway credits also include Act One, Billy Elliot, and
The Importance of Being Earnest. His performance in the short-lived 2009 revival of Brighton Beach Memoirs nevertheless earned him the Drama Desk Award as Best Featured Actor in a Play.
The musical is based on Simon’s 1977 screenplay, which starred Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss, who won the Oscar for Best Actor. Bernadette Peters and Martin Short co-starred in the original 1993 Broadway production of The Goodbye Girl, which played the Marquis Theatre. It received five Tony Award nominations
including Best Actress (Peters), Best Actor (Short), Best Choreography (Graciela Daniele), Best Direction (Michael Kidd), and Best Musical. It played 188 regular performances and 23 previews.
Songs from the Broadway production include “No More,” “Paula (An Improvised Love Song),” “How Can I Win?,” “I Think I Can Play This Part,” and “What a Guy.”
A revised version of the musical, featuring numerous new songs, premiered in London in 1997 starring Ann Crumb. Original cast albums of both the Broadway and London productions preserve the scores.
