May 3, 1974: Michael Bennett called. “Marvin, I know you’re probably stuck in Hollywood now, but drop everything and come to New York.”

I told him yes.

May 7, 1974: It’s extraordinary to me that the big decisions are made in seconds. I returned the Hertz car and said good-bye to the apartment on La Cienega and Fountain. Made the dreaded call to my “motion-picture” agent. Gave him the bad news. He can’t believe that I’m crazy enough to abandon Hollywood after the three Oscars. “Marvin,” he asks me, “are you nuts?” (Finally, he’s noticed.) I knew I had let him down.

I flew back to New York. (From the book: “The Way I Was.)
